I'm a big fan of films that have the slight dreamlike or surrealist quality to them. A town where everyone just unquestioningly accepts that teen boys have to murder a pumpkin monster every year to prevent the town from dying is right up my alley that way. It really requires some suspension of disbelief, but if you can treat the story as a collective dream-logic folk tale, you'll be all the better for it. Dark Harvest is a beautifully filmed…
One of the most effective illustrations of how grief can truly stop you from living. If you don't let yourself process your loss, you might as well have died with the dead. This movie has affected far more than I ever would have expected, given its lack of notoriety. The flashback scenes feature the most genuine look at teen romance I've ever seen on film. The score is powerful and moving. It left me at once shattered and uplifted.
I won't pretend this is a flawless film, but I couldn't care less. The emotional resonance of this film has stuck with me ever since I was 16 years old. The performances have so much soul to them, complimented by gorgeous production design and maybe my favourite soundtrack of all time. I've seen it 20+ times and I still tear up at the ending.
