Beautiful, melancholic, and sparse. A tragic story of a relationship where time, space and altered perceptions got in the way of their love and that love got in the way of their friendship. Wonderfully shot with epic New York and Seoul city scapes and civic spaces. I wonder how much of that conversation Arthur understood.

Predictable storyline with some obvious dialogue and ordinary acting. Saved by some heartfelt and real moments but I have no clue how this got an Oscar nomination. Sideways is a much better giamatti and Payne combo.

Brilliantly joyous and despairingly bleak, Mikey Madison's performance draws you into Vanya's carefree world for the first half of the film and then sobers you up and crushes you in the second half. A captivating dichotomy underlined by that daft Take That remix.

Klaus Kinski, unsurprisingly, is brilliant at playing an absolute creep. Like other Herzog films, large swathes are dominated by nothing happening whatsoever, however this seems to supplement the spooky ambience. The boat passage sequence and the lighting used to allow prostheticised Kinski to achieve arch creep are some of my favourite Werner shots, but did there have to be so many rats?
