People who are saying this is "nuanced" or about "platonic love" are bending over backwards to defend the fact that THIS IS A MOVIE ABOUT A ROMANCE BETWEEN A 15-YEAR-OLD AND A 27-YEAR-OLD. Maybe Shinkai said it's not about romantic love, but the people who watch this movie without paying attention to the obvious romantic elements are kidding themselves.
