A film in desperate thrall to its portentous overstatement, built from painfully lengthy dialogue-heavy scenes and creakily played out around a mystery that, ultimately, is no mystery at all. The overworked visuals (360 degree pans, extended zooms) are the antithesis of visual storytelling. There's clearly an attempt to introduce narrative misdirection throughout, but each one of Leave the World Behind's troubling set-pieces ultimately turns out to be no more than what it first appears to be: another stepping stone, on a very straight path, to en ending free of drama or surprise.
