Verhoeven presents a thriller which such symbolism that represents so well the paranoia of the writer. Blending together Catholicism, spider metaphor and a very imaginative mind of the writer brings up this great thriller which the mystery is preserved up to the end.
The constant suggestion of red and blood alternating with religion symbols almost unconsciously gets us a notion that it's all correlated.
In the beginning of the movie, there's a scene which expresses all the writer's imagination and…

I wasn't expecting that ending at all!
It's fun all the time, Chaplin is a master of visual jokes, he manages to explore the best of every situation, with innocence (my favorite part, that's what makes him so adorable). Today I noticed that he directed, acted, composed the soundtrack and also sang in this movie... what else could you do, man? :)
It's also interesting to notice how his career progressed, in the beginning with slapstick comedy and then becoming more acid in the criticism. And both are great!

It bothered me how the director wanted to cover many love stories and intertwine them with such coincidences. Not to mention that the characters were superficial, with "love" based exclusively on appearances.
The imagery of the film was nice, as well as the piano songs (not much into the dance and sung parts).
The movie technically was great, but the story has an important role for my enjoyment, and that was too basic and unrealistic.

Re-watching after many years, the feelings on this movie just got stronger. The balance the Bong Joon-ho creates on drama, horror and comedy becomes even sharper to me.
Even the theatrical ending grabs me totally, maybe from the nostalgia of seeing it again.
The monster effects aged well, just some other effects CGI not so much.
The charisma of the characters stays as a great bound to make us keep excited all over the movie, as well as the unpredictability…
