  Of the ones i’ve seen (ikiru is a huge blind spot for me) this is Kurosawa’s most humanist film. Very Tolstoy. Absolutely wonderful.

  I liked a lot of the first half but what really sold me was what happened after the intermission. All the stuff with okuni was so beautiful.

  not sure if this is my fav kurosawa (the bar is so high) but i really loved it

  Toshiro Mufaine is so god damn charismatic

  If you handed the printed wikipedia page and a playlist of early bob’s biggest hits to the tim robbins character from The Player this is the movie he would’ve come up with.

  Timmy is great, perfected the mannerisms. very much a Performance performance but that’s so bob. he’s a bit of a gremlin. everyone else is really solid. since 50% of this movie is *reaction shot of someone listening* the performances have a lot of weight to carry. shout out…
