The Brutalist 2024
When I saw the Statue of Liberty on I-95 this weekend I remembered what a powerful shot it is to see it upside down on the screen at the start of the movie. The American Dream always had a dark side and that scene instantly tells the viewer that they aren’t getting the classic patriotic treatment, or even the some-good some-bad nuance that so many other works illustrate. It’s the complete opposite. Freedom is consumed with greed, ingenuity with ignorance, happiness by malice. The destination for so many is not worth the journey endured.

Dune: Part Two 2024
My hype was astronomical for this movie. I could go on so many tangents, but it was brilliantly executed. Almost all the changes from the book were necessary to translate it to film, and combined with the fact I hadn’t seen part 1 or read the book in years, I didn’t quite see everything coming which made for some nice surprises. I love Feyd-Rautha even more now, Austin Butler killed it and I want to see Elvis asap.
