Ernest Cole: Lost and Found 2024
South African photographer of the apartheid era, also shot stills and footage of black life in the USA - with manifest parallels. This documentary works well in using the photographic content to illustrate its historical narrative, but then throws in a curve ball with the mystery of a stash of photos held in a Swedish bank. The lack of explanation (or even a plausible theory) for this mystery only serves to distract from the main body of the work.
