Seána Kerslake shines as an antagonistic rather unlikable character. Kerslake somehow finds a way to portray Mary’s inner turmoil with a delicate but powerful performance that pulls a rabbit out of the hat by giving the audience just enough rope to find empathy for the troubled young woman.

The unfolding drama is nicely laced with respites of comic relief that cuts the tension and keeps the gravitas of the subject matter within a semi-comfortable realm. The film deftly serves up multidimensional characters with seeming ease.

Almost Blue. That’s how I feel as the end credits roll.

I’ve always been drawn to sadness in films and books and might not have fully realized my enjoyment of the soulfulness of sadness extended to music as well had I not listened to Chet Baker. His trumpet and voice are both purity. Gorgeous instruments that produce such beautiful sadness in tone and spirit.

I don’t believe I’ve heard a voice like Chet Baker before. It feels like an extension…
