    The Substance

Disgustingly addictive tension that builds and crashes like a wave that you just can’t take your eyes off of. One of the best, well-rounded films I’ve watched in a bit, and while it’s feminist message doesn’t add anything trailblazing to the conversation, it definitely makes the viewer re-think their ease on casual judgment.

    Speak No Evil

    ★★★½

Pure, simple, sickly fun. Speak no Evil relies on suspense far more than horror, but the comedic element paired with fresh social commentary is more than enough to please the masses (myself included). Besides McAvoy’s charisma shining through, the movie provides enough simplicity to enjoy the ride effortlessly; but also enough character context to connect certain behaviors to various identifiable (and maybe even relatable) motifs, which ultimately catapults the movie to land on its feet.

    Mothers' Instinct

    ★★½

Firstly, there is no denying the impeccable performances and the effectively portrayed (subtle at times, but equally as infuriating) oppression of the 60’s housewife / woman. Unfortunately, Mother’s Instinct truly misses the mark when giving into revealing the dark conclusion so explicitly. Although doing so must’ve been tempting for the writers, sacrificing some shock value would work wonders towards an interesting, fresher, more realistic and mature outcome. Pleasant watch, but missed the mark on exploring underlying themes beneath the surface and an unaccomplished ending that could’ve and should’ve left the viewer with some sense of food for thought.

Pure horror, a level of disturbing, evil and roughness I had forgotten about in recent years. A film that delves into themes of humanity: how fragile yet evil we can be, and one that unleashed a hidden but overwhelming feeling of helplessness that lingered with me for a couple of days even after the ending credit rolled. Definitely the best horror movie of the year.
