there's something about pacing that prompts the dialogue or the style of the movie to follow suit, but the latter in Past Lives felt largely incongruous. for a film paced so slowly, with many shots of the new york/seoul cityscape languorously passing by, the dialogue felt way too on the nose with none of the subtlety of the stunning cinematography.

i’m clearly in the minority when i say i mad dislike this movie. peripheral issues of Somerset’s impending retirement and his subsequent desire to be reassigned to another, less intense case before he retires, along with the personality clash with his new younger, greener partner Mills, rather than enhance the movie, frustrate and dilute the pulse of its exposition. the script is abysmally juvenile too. Somerset saying, “i can’t get involved in this” during one of his many (tedious) appeals…
