With the exception of the truly genius "The Thing", what I've seen of John Carpenter has always felt lightly anemic in its construction. Something never quite sits right with the acting, or pacing, or editing, or really any one particular thing that makes his work sit in an uneasy place of hesitant appreciation (or at worst, boring). Dancing lights, collapsing dreams, and the stinging bite of the diseased city. Otomo proves once again that you dont necessarily need to have strong characters if they are merely a conduit for the world. It's great how disposable everyone is in this. Main cast members killed as readily as any background head, but this is hardly a tragedy; those that saw the flaw would have already escaped. We're trapped with those who didn't walk away from Omelas, and it's dope.
