Rebels of the Neon God 1992
Writing this a bit after so I don’t remember every detail but this is definitely the most accessible of the Tsai films so far and the most traditional plot presentation. I think that allowed me to engage with it more deeply. The long shots in this felt the most interesting/engaging for my somewhat-Tiktok brain because they were in public, and there were often multiple characters to observe or an interesting backdrop. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 1966
Tuco might’ve been The Ugly, but seeing him with his cute little pink umbrella makes him The Beautiful in my book.
So many of the camera shots felt really modern, especially all the close ups which you wouldn’t find in older Westerns but they built tension so well.
Like The Wild Bunch, it felt more like a proto-action movie which happened to be set in the West rather than a traditional Western, but I was still super engaged the whole time and Clint is Clint, so I can’t complain.
