Some of the most searing drama I’ve seen. Philip Barantini again uses the one-shot style to magnificent effect. Where most directors would cut away, he lingers on conversations that give so much depth and humanity to these characters. I’m so impressed by these actors, some of whom have never acted before. This is one of those shows that has clearly had a lot of work, care and research put into it, yet the end product is seamless. Everyone should watch this. Show it in all the schools.

Happy Together 1997
Some overwhelmingly beautiful moments: two lovers who hate each other sharing a dance, Tony Leung crying into a recorder, a waterfall abyss. Wong Kar-wai’s aesthetic choices are second to none. Yearning and loneliness are visceral, violent emotions in his films. While I found certain elements of the plot and ending slightly lacking on initial impression, I know this will stay with me, and I just loved the vibe of the whole thing.

I'm Still Here 2024
Absolutely adored this. When done as well as this, the family drama is probably my favourite genre. I’m Still Here is so much more than that of course, but it’s the patient, authentic portrayal of family dynamics and enduring bonds that pushed the film to 5 star level for me. Completely heartbreaking but also so hopeful and compassionate, as cinema should be.

Challengers 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Like a spicy margarita on a hot day. Challengers feels like the film Luca Guadagnino has been building towards his whole career; it’s his sexiest, most entertaining and simply best film yet. The power plays are as thrilling as the tennis rallies, culminating in a triumphant, and perfect, final serve. COME ON!
