The Brutalist 2024
The refreshing thing about this film is how it avoids being defined by the trappings of any one of the themes that it confronts. There's never a sense that it's a film about migration, about creative genius, about torturous obsession, addiction, disability, abuse, family, neglect, belonging, loss or reinvention.
It covers all of that, but it doesn't dwell, linger or insist. Instead, it brings its themes to us in the same way that they present themselves organically in life - unannounced, abruptly, and without the guarantee of recurrence that a narrative usually carries.
In the best possible way, it's just a film about a guy.
