  Proving that he can take a more subtle approach, Shyamalan's The Visit does eventually end up in quite a silly place, but is restrained enough for much of its running-time to maintain an unsettling tone.

  With a bizarre but satisfying plot, and some surprisingly radical ideas for what appears to be a middle-of-the-road comedy vehicle for Whoopi Goldberg, The Associate deserves more attention.

  Goldberg is a talented investment banker in New York who struggles as a black, female professional to be taken seriously. Realising that her male co-workers are stealing her work, she strikes out on her, but fails to attract clients until she invents a white, successful partner.

  What We Do in the Shadows 2014

  Charming, inventive horror comedy that uses a mock-documentary form to explore the lives of a group of vampires sharing a flat in New Zealand. The deadpan (more so than usual) style of co-director Jemaine Clement's Flight of the Conchords produces a lot of memorable asides and lines, with Shadows never over-extending its simple, excellent premise: making a group of immortal vampires as awkward and self-deluded as everyone else.
