Richard Brooks's adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play is a scintillating and emotionally palpable drama that refuses to allow the Hays Code to stop it from being a provocative psychosexual family drama or a tremendous acting showcase for Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman and Burl Ives.
