Credit where it’s due for at least trying to tell a new story this time around, the film also does have its moments occasionally. For the most part however there just isn’t much to be invested in, for a prequel story it adds little of value to the lore, and there are still portions that feel like a retread of the original. The music is also pretty forgettable despite it being penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
A solidly-acted, nicely shot, interesting drama that accomplishes what it set out to do. It’s not really a typical prison drama however, there’s no real violence or intensity, and the inmates have a fairly gentle rapport. It’s largely a feel-good story about how art can be uplifting. Well-intentioned for sure, but I just wasn’t quite as gripped or hit hard emotionally by it for that reason. It’s still good though.
A real head-scratching misfire. There’s no excuse for this not being at least mildly entertaining. It’s incredibly bland, convoluted, the emotional core driving the plot is flatter than a board, and the performances range from merely passable to “when’s payday?”. Then the final act is this tonal disaster that tries to be exciting, funny, and heartfelt and fails at all of it. Best film of the year and a rare sequel that outdoes the original by leaps and bounds. Just the perfect blockbuster.
