“In the East lies our tomorrow.” In all the many thinkpieces and reviews of this film, I have barely if ever seen mention of the fact that it is explicitly about nazis as settler colonialists, and the inextricability of one from the other. Little less the way that is mirrored in the so brazenly laid before us genocidal occupation of Palestine, and theft of Palestinian land, homes, possessions, as well as lives, as settlers frolic and flourish on the other…

“What do you know about cruelty?”

We often speak of memorable endings, but High Life for me has always had one of the most memorable film openings: the scintillating mystery and wonder and horror of these sequences of a man and a baby alone on a space ship, the mission report he has to give to renew their life support systems for another day, while trying to keep the ship’s decaying at bay; the crew he dispatches to space burial,…

my favorite Cronenberg on the biggest IMAX screen with Cronenberg and Howard Shore in the house… Crony spilled the tea about all the big name American actors being too scared to do this before Jeremy Irons said yes… Shore said he watched the cut once then dreamt about it then composed the theme based on his dream and not really to the film itself… which was apparently brand new information to Cronenberg 🥲 who also said he ranks this among his best work ever which is FACTS. thank you so much

it’s rare for a comedic tone like this to really work for me but I shockingly loved Pattinson’s Mickey (should have never doubted him)… the sweetness of his and Nasha’s dynamic… soooooo good… I’m so ambivalent about Mark Ruffalo’s current career phase of playing buffoons can he go away… as a critique of colonialism/capitalism it’s like whatever… the social/political dynamics around Mickey himself are where it’s most interesting. thank you so much for the expendable Robert Pattinson space exploitation and sexcapades cinematic universe (this and High Life)

I enjoyed this well enough for like, the first half but the opening sequence through the kid rowing away repeating his vengeance mantra seemed to promise a signature batshit Eggers romp that the rest of the movie just never delivered on, sinking more and more into nicely framed substanceless spectacle and weirdo patriarchal bullshit. Kind of nauseating that Kidman's main scene in this is the revelation that the father Amleth is avenging was actually a total scumbag rapist piece of…
