a slow searing burn that is so vulnerable and courageous. the portrait of violence and misogyny in the oppressive Iranian regime is sickening as it exposes the darkest most violent misjustices that are happening in broad daylight. the performances from the women in this film are so compelling and daring. the final act will have you in a chokehold.

The Substance 2024
The way the men watching this are clutching their pearls.
I think it’s really interesting the way Corsair Fargeat presented women’s bodies and the male gaze in this film. Sue understands what men want to see & what sells so presents herself as the object that they want. The excessive nudity and hyper-sexualization of her character shows the absurdity of the commodification of women’s bodies. In order to take up space she has to present herself in a way that is overtly sexy and painfully “perfect.”
Also, I’m never eating shrimp again.
