Western Pacific Agent 1950
"They were all strangers, except for a few I didn't recognise."
This is the first time I've ever laughed out loud at a Film Noir, Sid Melton throws out some real zingers! The plot is pretty bog standard but clips along nicely, Sam Newfield always keeps things tight - he's probably always in a rush to start on his next film, twenty per year at his peak. QT favourite Mickey Knox (ring any bells Natural Born Killers fans?) as always…

Assassin for Hire 1951
Getta your tootsie-fruitsie ice cream! - Cockney Sydney Tafler's horrendous Cornetto Italian accent is painfully grating - he should have stuck to being the king of spivs. Still an ok watch as our psycho philatelist killer accidentally pops his whiny violinist brother, or does he? Much hammy soul searching ensues. If only dear old Mama coulda beena here someaday to see it. Mamma Mia etc. If the Brit plods could only stop sucking thoughtfully on their pipes for a moment they may even solvea da case.

Flaxy Martin 1949
Standard Noir that tries just a little too hard to tick all the right gangster boxes, so much so that it sinks into caricature at times. Virginia Mayo's titular scheming fatale is as sneeringly absurd as Dorothy Malone's doe eyed Nora is unbelievably naive.
Elisha Cook Jr. maintains his usual high standard of weasel like behaviour, but Zachary Scott still sweats smarm, even as the good guy, and the studio setting is just a little too obvious.
The score from Looney Tunes composer William Lava is pretty powerful though, almost feels like it's in the wrong movie.

Finger Man 1955
No, it's not about the world's weirdest super hero who goes around pointing at stuff (see poster). I'd love to see that film. It's a passable low level B Noir with a rare lead role for the walking pencil head Frank Lovejoy. Likable, but stiff as a board and a bit dull, Frank's desperate (and hapless) hood Casey Martin starts working for the man and aims his back stabbing snitch digit at California's Mr Big, Forest Tucker's Dutch Becker.
Plenty…
