Metropolis 1927
Incredible. Exceeded my expectations. I’m finding it hard to find words for how I feel about it. The opening scenes truly got my heart racing—I’ve never seen anything like it. Chilling and hauntingly gorgeous.
The design of the sets and buildings, Bauhaus and Cubism, the seven deadly sins, the horror of the stare of the Maschinenmensch, the factory explosion swallowing the workers, Robot Maria as the Antichrist atop a throne of dragons, mad science, revenge, deceit, camaraderie, worker’s rights in the Weimar Republic, the New Woman, “The machine! There needs to be someone at the machine!” I’m in love with it all.
