First third of this movie is top tier: terrific chemistry and an interesting chain of events. Yes, the other characters are uninteresting, but it was the nineties/early 2000’s, cut them some slack for succumbing to stereotypes. Of course, if this movie came out today, I’d be less forgiving. The middle portion is funny but becomes slightly tired after a while and hard to watch. Andie’s constant scheming makes us forget what her real personality is like. The dinner party scene feels a little lazy, and the grand finale is the “I’ve got to find her before she leaves!” hallmark to these rom coms.
Sinister 2 drags out its suspense in relatively effective manner, though cumbersome at times. The premise of the movie—as Elliot realizes he’s become part of this ancient, demonic web of gruesome murder—is fascinating and terrifies watchers on its own. The Oswalds’ performance is adequate and Hawkes delivers a compelling character, but he sometimes succumbs to tropes and unnatural sequences of actions, much to my frustration. Despite the powerful suspense, it often culminated in underwhelming and lazy jump scares. Terrific potential that is squandered in execution.
Even if the execution of the film can be clumsy at times, the premise is so fascinating that it on its own provokes a powerful response in viewers — a nostalgic longing for love long-bygone.
Wow. Just wow. I am, quite simply put, blown away. Watching this was a euphoric experience that will likely never be replicated in any facet of my life again.
