The best, and scariest, version of this story (albeit still not that scary).

Queer 2024
It's weird how completely unlike my vision of/feeling for Burroughs' book this film is, despite Guadagnino clearly having connected with it so profoundly in his youth. It sounds like this is a common reaction to the film ("Where's the grit and the nastiness!?"). Daniel Craig's Lee, Reznor & Ross's score and the matte-painted Mexico City here is much more straightforwardly lyrical and moving than the book's tormented twisted interactions that repulse and compel in equal measure. But I don't see why…

Eternity 2017
You can't really ask for more than this from a film. It's documentary-like in that it shows us a real way of life that the vast majority of us will be completely ignorant about and a language which has never been spoken by characters in a movie before. But this is not a documentary and it uses the power of narrative to make us feel (a lot, be prepared) and be awe-struck by the beauty and brutality of the Andes…

Contempt 1963
I can only imagine that film critics have been collectively brainwashed by their love of the French New Wave into regarding this as a masterpiece. The film centres around an argument between Bardot and Piccoli over her falling out of love with him. It's incredibly tedious and no stylistic flourishes of camerawork could change that. At least once they go to Capri in the final act the colours kept me awake and Delerue's score is beautiful (though is it meant to be ironically luscious?).
