Impressive work with black and white photography in this one. Especially the use of image distortion and the low key lighting are standouts.

It's a shame how low risk this one is. It's almost a complete remake of the original. Nothing new to say at all. Beyond some beautiful visuals I expected more from Egger's interpretation. Instead it's just a solid but pretty toothless redoing. I hope he returns to handling some original material next.

When there is not a single character to sympathise or identify with, root for or feel any kind of emotion towards, the result is a pretty lifeless film overall. Sadly this was my experience with this one.

Maybe never seen a film that feels so much like from the very time it is set in. A truly immersive experience, thanks to filmmaking on a masterful level. Seeing this in 70mm with an intermission (thanks to the Gartenbaukino in Vienna) is one of those cinematic experiences I will remember forever. Career-best performances from Adrian Brody and Guy Pearce. One of the best films on the post-war experience I have seen in recent times. Yes, there is an american dream, but not everyone gets to live that dream.
