  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 2017

  The 'chosen family' theme would have been interesting had the film not been afraid to actually explore it.

  Fast, fun, flashy. Some cool action sequences. Some hysterical pop culture references. Groot is adorable. And Rocket cracks me up for some inexplicable reason.

  But this film begs us to take it seriously at times and because of its inability to explore its themes and insistence on using action movie cliches, it falls flat. And its problematic at times (i.e. almost every moment with Mantis -- yikes).

  Molly's Game 2017

  Though Sorkin's film may lack the nuances of an experienced filmmaker, he does provide Chastain an outlet to showcase her depth and ability as one of the best actresses in her field. She is a delight here. And Sorkin's respect for Molly Bloom is fully evident; he defends her, intimately following her through both narration and framing. Perhaps a bit overt, but oh well. I was on her side, too.
