Film Noir and its Deviations: A Long Review

In a Lonely Place is an interesting film due to its balance between staying true to many noir themes and archetypes while simultaneously subverting others. The film contrasts the darkness of noir elements with the temporary optimism of a traditional love story. Gangsters don’t talk their problems out, they shoot ‘em out!

Surprisingly high body count and incredibly fast paced for 1932. Old school violent delight.

Not sure I liked it as much as Millionaire’s Express, but pretty darn close.

Action-packed kung-fu ‘Nam mashup with lots of bodies hitting the floor all the way through, both friendly and foe.

While I was initially disappointed that Criterion’s Godzilla Box Set had the international version of this movie, I was pleasantly surprised and didn’t mind it’s edits. While the dub is a bit lazy, the actual movie feels quite fun and has some good humor, action, and effects. While not as sophisticated as the original Godzilla, I would challenge with my belief that Godzilla vs King Kong is a more entertaining watch for general audiences. I’ll have to get around to watching the Japanese release version someday.

    The Wolf of Wall Street

    ★★★

Scorsese’s take on Black Monday and the true story of Jordan Belanger is outrageous and shows the materialistic greed we all likely have deep down. With a great score, absurd comedy, and just tiny* amounts of sex, drugs, and violence, The Wolf of Wall Street is a visually memorable story that quite literally comes crashing down around itself.
