Islander has some great performances, particularly Thomas Hilbreth, and looks into a community that I personally haven’t really seen in film. This film feels very much a labor of love. I caught this streaming awhile back but sought out a dvd copy for bonus features and there wasn’t a lot but more than I expected. I thought it was interesting how one crucial scene had to change because of local superstitions, and the way it is in the film I think works much more effectively than how it was originally planned.

I would’ve wanted to watch this for either Brent Spiner or Angela Bettis but I needed to watch this because by some miracle it has both. I honestly thought this would be a bit of a sleeper but it was way more bizarre than I could’ve anticipated. This took years to track down but I’m excited/relieved to have it. And now like It this will sustain me for 27 years while I hibernate until another copy presents itself.

Picked this up on blu ray because having the dvd isn’t good enough anymore, and it’s still hands down one of my favorite romantic comedies. You know how it ends before you even see it, so the tenth time or the twentieth time doesn’t ruin any mystique. It just feels good to watch it.

It’s an interesting film, and when I saw it pop up on Amazon I jumped at the chance to see an early Angela Bettis role. She gives a really strong and moving performance as the sheltered and emotionally smothered Lolly. Douglas Spain gives a great performance as Joseph, though I feel like he got short changed a bit with some clunky lines. I thought he looked familiar and was pleasantly surprised he had played young Chakotay on ST:Voyager. The directing and writing could have been better to tell this story but it’s definitely worth the watch for the performances.
