The cinematography and costumes are beautiful! But that's it. There's no real story, and the film is highly problematic. First, the portrayal of 'Latinos' in the film: they can have sex with them in hotels, but they aren't considered boyfriend material. I'm not sure if the depiction of Ayahuasca was handled appropriately either, potentially stigmatizing the indigenous peoples of the forest. Overall, it's a visually pleasing film to watch, but it would have been much better as a silent movie.
Undine is a fascinating blend of fairy tale and raw human emotion. The opening minutes poignantly reflect on how modern life denies us the time to grieve, as the world relentlessly moves on, even after heartbreaking experiences. Beyond the couple's love story, Berlin’s architecture and history emerge as pivotal characters, seamlessly intertwining with the protagonists' journey. Christian Petzold masterfully crafts this tale, creating one of the most captivating and extraordinary romances in modern cinema.
