Great movie for the unique (at the time) approach to aliens, as well as the high quality of the filming and special effects. Watched it with a group, and it provoked a lot of discussion from people who don't normally want to discuss things. Klaatu's seemingly intentional portrayal as a Christ figure is especially interesting. I do think the conclusion doesn't make much sense; Klaatu's people are supposedly advanced beyond fear and violence, but we come to find out they are not violent because they are being policed by all-seeing robots who will vaporize anyone who misbehaves.
When the bishop suggests that Cary Grant's character is actually a demon, he might be on to something. Angel comes to town, has an emotional affair with the bishop's wife, ruins the plans for a new cathedral, and everyone somehow decides this is a good thing....
Does a better job of integrating the war into the movie's main plot than the original, but casting Carrie Underwood as Maria was a terrible decision and ruins what might have otherwise been a good remake.
Could really do without the movie's positive attitude toward sexual assault.
