Once upon a time, Walt Disney made an animated short film about an introverted, prancing, sissy gay boy who doesn't like sport and grows up to be a muscle queen yet no less flamboyantly homo whose eyes bulge at the sight of a half-naked Spanish man who he proceeds to lick. Oh, the boy is actually a bull. How progressive!

At one point, two kids in Halloween costumes jump out from behind a corner to scare the lead actress. "Trick or treat!?!" These are the only two characters we see in costumes and the only evidence that this is apparently even set on Halloween at all.

Gets an extra half a star for the gay goth raves.

Firstly, can I just mention how hot Gene Hackman is in this? Like, good grief. Part of his charm has always been his personification of masculinity, but I love that he is just as comfortable and reads just as authentic while being the exacting basketball coach in Hoosiers (to pick one new-to-me films of his I have seen recently) as he can be wearing turtlenecks and suede jackets here. Just a big ol' handsome man, baby.

    Interesting to consider this…

I can't help but feel as if, in writing this movie, its makers somewhat over-estimated how interesting wind is. I guess it's trying for, what? Mad Max in the sky? But its poky lil aircrafts sweeping through the same two valleys over and over again fail to, ahem, lift off. I wouldn't object to somebody programming this in a double feature after Shadow in the Cloud because you wouldn't miss much if you left early.

    Might be curious to see…

    It's like poetry.

No, you cried because of the way it encapsulates yearning and change and the humanity and the performances and the cinematography and the shot of the mirror. I could watch this movie a dozen times in a row right now and continue finding beautiful, perfect moments. It speaks to a world I know all too well. I just loved every single second so much my heart could burst.
