patient and deliberate, it plays its cards close to the chest, withholding crucial information while laying out a gripping story filled with rounded and complex characters, making superb use of point of view and misdirection without ever feeling cheap, and making the viewer desperate to learn what is really going on, up until the reveal in the third act, which was as surprising as it was beautiful. after seeming like it would go down a path of tragedy and disgrace, the touching and humane ending struck a chord. brilliantly executed.

Four Days in September 1997
a tense and gritty film that handles its delicate and important historical context with grace and generosity. if you're as invested as i am in the stakes of brazil's nationhood, you'll be on the edge of your seat.

Magnolia 1999
i'll give it points for its ambition and execution, but i was let down by the quality of its writing: the characters are one-dimensional and unbelievable, their stories unoriginal, and the dialogue can get cringeworthy at points. its climactic frog storm sequence is memorable, sure, but the ending feels underwhelming. a movie that thinks it's deeper than it actually is.
