One of those films that takes a mainstay of the horror genre (in this case, demonic possession) and approaches it in its own very specific local terms. Supernatural, but also ecological and political; the countryside as the most abandoned but also the most polluted of spaces.

Tampers with the usual ratios of professional/personal content in detective stories, foregrounding the personal, which in theory sounds unpromising for fans of the genre but is in fact mesmerising. Utterly compelling characterizations and relationships, this film is honeycombed with beautiful symmetries, circularities and resonances. Loved it.
