After Hours 1985
Criterion Challenge 2024
#47 of 52: 1980s. Watched: 1/52Starting off the challenge strong! It seems to be a common thread that After Hours is the “least Scorsese’ Scorsese, and i get it because it’s not a grandiose epic like KOTFM, WOWS, or The Irishman. However, one of the most important constants across Scorseses work remains: Thelma Schoonmaker’s snappy on-point editing. The way she cuts the scenes together is crucial to developing the atmosphere. I knew from the first shot pushing into Paul’s desk that I was going to love this one.

Monsieur Verdoux 1947
A bonkers tightrope of slapstick comedy, drama, and suspense. As poignant now as it was brave in 1947.

Oppenheimer 2023
“Did you think if you let them tar and feather you that the world would forgive you?… because it wont.”
I had the opportunity to see this in 70mm IMAX and it was the both the best and most enjoyable cinematic experience of my lifetime thus far. Christopher Nolan’s craft is on full display. Obviously, with his direction but also his writing (probably the best of his career.)
Oppenheimer had incredible performances across the board. Cillian will win the Oscar…
