  Portrait of Dorian Gray meets the Fly, except I really enjoy both of those stories and this left a lot to be desired. Hyper aestheticized in every possible way including grotesque sound detail everywhere. Tonally felt like a music video. High gloss, no depth. If that’s the operative metaphor for The Substance, it just makes it feel more of an amateur effort.

  Grounding, time dilating cinema. 

  Hirayama leads a quiet life of relative solitude and remembers to practice gratitude during his weekly routine as a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He is a master of freezing the moment, whether it be with analog cassette recordings, books, bathhouse soaks or a clockwork documentation of his favourite tree in 35mm photography. A calm and captivating meditation on mindfulness.
