A fantastic first half should have been the whole film, but Peter Strickland leans into some real weird ethereal horror sex comedy for a solid hour, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste anchors it with a performance I found unexpectedly moving. The retail exchanges struck a chord with the service worker of my past, and made current me laugh far too hard.
This movie is such a delectable, implicative slice of horror. It does an amazing job of indoctrinating and gaslighting the audience as much as the characters visiting the Härga(??). Dunno if I've ever felt quite the sensation of my consciousness being rotate tooled out of my body before watching this one in theaters amidst people who felt the ending was happy because of the catharsis it provided, but I *knew* something special just happened to me.
I couldn't walk straight that night from how upset I was. I watched it again a week later.
The Duke of Burgundy's (more) fucked up, heteropassing younger brother might be the funniest take on Bluebeard I'll watch. The movie is a sensory treat, and I can watch the core trio all day. Leslie Manville quietly walks away wirh this movie amidst the three central performances with the most threatening breakfast I've seen in a minute.
I adore this one. Yorgos Lanthimos helms this weirdly accessible blend of Peter Greenaway and Armando Iannucci. We benefit.
I relate rather deeply to Sarah Churchill's unrelenting forwardness, and I love how intensely watchable all three core characters are. It's quietly, queerly thrilling stuff.
