The Awakening 1982
Watched this on the same night as Toby in LA, and it was a fitting double bill. This one is if Teorema was set in Malibu. A christ-like hitchhiker wanders into a widowed man's life, stays with him for a few nights as the man embarks on his first gay affair. There's not much more to the plot than that, but I thought the film had a ghostly almost gothic quality that isn't easy to pull off, it elevates it above your standard fare gay sex film.

The Kid from L.A. 1976
Watched the Toby in LA version from Vinegar Syndrome after hearing it discussed on the Ask Any Buddy podcast. I was really taken with it. It reminded me of Model Shop and a lot of other quintessential LA movies. It's almost as if Sofia Coppola made the straight version of this with Somewhere (her best film imo).
Like Somewhere, it is decidedly a narrative film that cares much more about showing a hypnotic directionless feeling to living in LA than…
