Some scenes were truly wonderful and we love gay allegory in movies, truly daring for the 1930's. I especially love the atmosphere.
Unfortunately I don't think I've ever seen a movie juggle different tones so clumsily. The comedy was especially rough. its a real shame, it could have been so great.
I liked this more than i thought i would, but it is what i would describe as worryingly pro church and pro rednecks. I guess what i mean is that it takes a "few bad apples" stance on authoritarian religious doctrine and that thesis permiates the movie like background radiation.
But to be honest, it is still pretty fun the movie looks pretty good and Kevin is a delight.
This combination of his girl friday and victims of sins is fascinating. Barbara is so good God damn, i might like her better in this than in double indemnity, and i love double indemnity.
