This gets upgraded to a 2.5 for Rutger Hauer. Although he’s largely wasted in this role, he does liven things up whenever he’s on screen. Zero chemistry between Stallone and Williams (although Williams does his best with a poor script). Stallone is completely sunk by the one dimensional script and delivers a subpar performance even by his standard. He looks good in those smokey tinted glasses though. Zero political insight or examination of bigger picture ideas behind the action. Fun to see early 80s NYC and the silliness of the grand finale had me in stitches.
Appreciated being reminded that there is more depth to Kevin Smith than the obnoxious persona he inhabits for his IMDb interviews at Sundance. For me where this film worked (at least in some way) was revealing the sweet, unpretentious guy beneath the surface of the caricature of himself he’s hidden behind over the last quarter century. A guy who makes what he loves and loves the people that love what he makes. As a doc, it’s not particularly artful, and…
