    Venom: The Last Dance

    ★★½

If you enjoyed the first two Venom movies, then this one is right up your alley. It channels the same chaotic energy. It’s got some good laughs, an emotional bromance, but much like its predecessors, has little consideration for coherence. The tone is inconsistent. The climax is still one big, muddy, CGI slugfest. But mostly, Venom: The Last Dance is an oddity in that it feels more like a second movie in a trilogy than the third. So much is…

    Outside

    ★★★½

While Outside may not be a landmark zombie movie, it is still an important and very welcome addition to the canon. Director Carlo Ledesma gives us a quiet, mature film that excels in its restraint. Dune: Part Two

    ★★★★★

Dune: Part Two isn’t a sequel, but a shimmering second act that successfully completes one of Hollywood’s long unattainable goals. Villeneuve succeeds where Jodorowsky and Lynch have failed by paring down Herbert’s complex mythology and fully embracing the language of cinema and everything the medium can do. He brings all of his filmmaking prowess to bear in this bold and ambitious monument that is science fiction by name but utterly Shakespearean by nature. This isn’t just a definitive adaptation, but a benchmark by which to judge any and all future adaptations. We have absolutely no notes.

    Rain Town

    ★★

There are two big issues with Rain Town. The first is that it doesn’t live up to the promise of its title (or marketing for that matter). Neither the rain nor the town are characters in this movie, they play no part in driving the narrative, and end up being nothing more than set dressing. (Which had us feeling shortchanged.) The second - and this is where the writing really fails - is that the movie lacks a point of…
