One of the most baffling movies I’ve ever seen. I cannot think of a single thing that happened that felt like it was of real consequence to the rest of the movie. Things just kind of happen around the characters in the hopes that one of the weird non-sequiturs will somehow be funny, and it doesn’t work nearly often enough. The huge list of stars makes me think this thing was just a money laundering scheme cause the movie doesn’t…
Deeply odd but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t compel me. A lot of humor is gained from having the main character act almost like an audience surrogate that we can sit alongside and be extremely confused with as the movie continually introduces various freaks and non-sequiturs. The actors all play their roles extremely well, Jeff Bridges’ charmingly laidback performance and John Goodmans big ‘worst relative at thanksgiving’ energy being the biggest highlights in my mind.
Amidst all the absurdity…
Despite some problems in the second half (B.E.N. my beloathed) treasure planet is beautiful both visually and thematically, and its troubled history as a longtime passion project shows in all of the best ways, as there isn’t a single moment where I doubted that this was a story the creators wanted to tell.
Short and sweet but not spectacular, missing link is a good way to kill an afternoon but doesn’t quite live up to Studio Laika’s best work. Still worth seeing at least once thanks to a good aesthetic and fun characters, but when compared to stop-motion contemporaries like Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and Coraline it tends to come up a bit short.
