This is a real grower. Give it like 15 mins and you’ll be in
Starts off innocent, playful. It’s the story of poverty told through the eyes of a child. But the tension, worries and concerns you have for her safety and fear it’s going to crumble just grow and grow. Felt like the walls were slowly but surely closing in.
I think this is a real top class movie. It’s the same director of Anora, which is how I found this one. How he captures the child’s experiences, oblivious to the danger/trauma/deprivation, but shows it for the audience to see and understand.
I appreciate the cinematography, great individual performances, imagery and all that. But it just didn’t land with me.
The best of this movie came in conversations between Brody’s character and the wealthy murica. Nothing felt rush and interactions were given time to breathe.
The worst- the story really. Couldn’t see how it all linked really. Then for a 3.5 hour movie it kinda abruptly wrapped up.
A bit of a soft core 50 shades of grey for the corporate and middle America femmes.
The pros
- props to this film for exploring the sexual fantasy’s of an older woman. Particularly in the dynamic of yearning to be submissive in a world where she has total control.
- the awkwardness of discovering a kink with someone is played out well. It’s uncomfortable and scary and that is experienced by both, if only briefly.
The cons
- this…
Currently going through Jeremy Jahn’s top 10 movies of 2024. This came in at #9 and I can see why. It’s main cast of 3 are excellent. It’s thrilling and builds suspense very well. Hugh Grant dips into the shadow of his charming side and takes it to insidious places.
There are big themes around religion and dogmatic belief present throughout. It doesn’t railroad the narrative though, and leads to some interesting exploration of different attitudes, before delivering its final punch.
It appears supernatural without being mystical.
Will you believe or disbelieve. Chose wisely.
