For so long I struggled to understand what Spike Lee was trying to communicate but finally after a discussion with some of my coworkers I finally got the point. No matter how flawed, annoying, racist and even sometimes violent the characters could be, never in a white neighborhood could someone choke a man to death while everyone watched, helpless.
I really, really wanted to enjoy this film. My enjoyment of QT’s work has been varied over his short filmography but generally I appreciate his vision and creativity. I thought Kill Bill would be a well made revenge thriller which didn’t follow stupid Hollywood archetypes and charmless dialogue. However, this movie just doesn’t work for me. The storyline doesn’t draw me in to engage with the revenge and definitely the characters leaving me wondering why I’m watching. The terrible anime…
My little brain at 18 couldn’t comprehend, enjoy or even sit through most of this film the first time and I’m happy to say some of that’s changed. Not to say my 20 year old brain can understand it, but at least I can sit through and enjoy these characters, world and messages that bombard the viewers senses. I think this movie demands rewatches and it shall receive that demand from me. I shall be returning to this film, hungry for more.
