A Rainy Day in New York 2019
What I really found fascinating about Allen's 50th effort is how old and nostalgic is at its soul. Maybe it's the piano melodies that come and go, or maybe it's Woody Allen's persona in its mid-20s that posesses a not so convincing Timothee Chalamet. Not everything works. Actually, a lot of things fail, but I can't help but react humanly to human propositions, to human desires and fears. Of course they're "WASP plutocrats" problems and worries, but that's the magic of Allen's screenwriting: it always speaks directly to my anxious and pretentious self.

My Neighbor Totoro 1988

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. 2023
When I started watching movies the annoying way (you know, logging them in Letterboxd) it became easier for me to forgot why I really love this art form. Every now and then, nonetheless, there's a movie that reminds me that even when showy cinematography and masterful directing are important when deciding a personal Movie of the Year, in the end I'll go with the film that makes me feel something (or a lot, to be accurate). This is just a beautiful story.
