Weird, even by Ghibli standards. Tedious and needlessly esoteric, with a few moments of natural beauty here and there.

The Black Cat 1989
A dark fairytale which takes its inspiration from Dario Argento's nightmarish "Suspiria" rather than Edgar Allan Poe's short-story. The cat of the title hardly plays any role at all in the film! The acting may be uninspired and the music plain awful, but the ludicrousness of the story gives it a certain charm. Nonsensical fun.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch 1982
Several horror films from 1982-83 dealt with the notion of television as a malevolent influence - besides "Halloween III", "Videodrome" (1982) and "Poltergeist" (1982) spring to mind - perhaps in response to the whole "video nasty" hysteria. "Halloween III" shares with Carpenter's original a certain hypnotic quality. But what makes part 3 so wonderful is that it is entirely its own - a marvellous mix of occultism and early 80s technology, science fiction, and folk lore; a nightmarish detective story…

Irma Vep 1996
Apparently a few scattered remarks about the state of the French film industry is enough to elevate a complete mess of a film to the status of a masterpiece. I find it hard to see "Irma Vep" as anything else than exactly that which it supposedly criticizes, a pretentious so-called intellectual exercise for people who studied film and are always looking for the next watered-down version of Godard. The director should have just made a full length fetish movie of Cheung in her latex suit, the result would have been more honest and a lot less annoying.
