the first hour is really really really fucking good tho
it’s unbelievable how Kurosawa is capable of evoking fear through ordinary things - an empty washing machine, a dripping sink, fire lighting a cigarette... the way he uses loud sounds in contrast to silence feels almost like quiet jumpscares, a constant sense of dread about something terrible that could happen. the execution is flawless and it effectively scared me throughout every minute of the whole film.
