Today my Letterboxd account turns seven years old. I thought I would celebrate by rewatching my first ever logged film, seen exactly seven years ago on this date. Appropriately, that film is Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal.

Well that's a very...austere picture. Obviously this is a movie of extremely little means. But it makes up for its lack of budget with plenty of vision. The cheap sets sometimes have their charms --with a power of composition coming from the blocking of the actors and stylized lighting choices. Dang, this was pretty good. Very first scene (crushed priest) and very last scene (homeless drifters) I think were on point. The dark comedy of this film reminded me of 80's Scorsese. The team-up religious angle reminds me of something like Dogma. Overall good tone, balancing mystery and comedy and horror.
