Rewatching this movie as an adult is a TRIP. Look at all those soon-to-be-famous people, making some real Choices re: accents and line delivery! Matt Dillon is Doing The Most and it’s so fun to watch. The original score is very Coppolaesque and reminiscent of 50s-60s films, while the Complete Novel soundtrack feels like they got a 2-for-1 on Elvis B-sides. The trade off is that the Complete Novel actually makes sense, while the original cut feels extremely rushed. Regardless…
It’s not often that the movie version of a book you liked makes you wonder: was the book actually bad?
Taking the scenes from the book out of chronological order didn’t work. Neither did Ansel Elgort. There were some scenes (the kiss and young Theo’s departure for New York) that desperately needed to be underscored and weren’t. The extra star is for the cinematography, which makes beautiful use of the colors in the original painting.
