I loved the Austin Powers series as a child, and watched each movie in order repeatedly. In adulthood, I have revisited this classic piece of cinema, and it holds up surprisingly well. Austin waking from a long slumber and grappling with the confusing neoliberal world of technology beyond his understanding resonates with the heart of an aging millennial. I got dragged into this film in theaters with little explanation and had the time of my life. Every character is so well-realized, whether they're designed to be loved or hated. Everything exists in a delightful heightened reality rivaled only by a very tiny sliver of high-quality anime, and I say that as glowing praise.
Wes Anderson films have me torn because my inner child hated sitting through them, but adult me seems to be riveted. My takeaway as a result? Pretty good, but it's no Austin Powers.
