Ozu’s most subversive and unpredictable. Complex and challenging, Takamine and Tanaka take the titular sisters through incredibly different and effecting paths. The overarching theme of cancer and disease is put to great use when the characters slowly come to realize what the actual infectious thing in their life is, breaking them down and slowly killing them.
